If you – as most – are not doing any kind of systematic evaluation of your intranet, e.g. doing regular user analysis or pulling analytics numbers, how would you know if your intranet is thriving or if it is in fact dying a quiet death? Wouldn’t you want to know?
At no cost other than the 60 minutes spent doing it, you could participate in the 2009 Global Intranet Survey, which was recently opened by Jane McConnell. Going through the survey questions will provide you with a structured approach to reflect on and evaluate your organisation’s intranet in a short time. Among our community of practice members, several have used the survey to generate discussion within the intranet team.
As a participant you will receive a complimentary copy of the “Global Intranet Trends for 2010″ which will be published in late October. This is the 4th annual survey; last year 226 organisations around the world took part. Jane publishes the results in a report, which has become a solid reference for current trends and developments on intranets globally.
One of the ways in which Jane segments the data is by what she calls the three stages of intranet maturity, allowing you to see what organisations in the same stage as yours are doing as well as how you could improve.
Some of the topics covered this year are:
- The workplace: Are intranets becoming the online workplace for employees or are they primarily communication tools?
- Ownership, governance, and strategy: How is the intranet team structured? Are intranet and internet teams being integrated?
- Measuring value: What indicators are being used to measure the value the intranet brings to an organisation: adoption, usage, satisfaction, workforce coverage, reduction of risk, business value?
It will be interesting to see what new trends have emerged in the intranet landscape compared to last year’s results, which, among other things, stated that the current intranet model is unsustainable. Will this year’s results show more advanced intranets, perhaps calling for a fourth stage of intranet maturity?
The survey will be open until early September, and you can find more information about signing up at Jane’s website.
Finally, remember that you can meet Jane McConnell at our Aarhus conference in November, where she will undoubtely share her new findings on how intranets around the world are doing.
Join our full day seminar, the International Intranet Day, on March 24 in Copenhagen, to learn from case studies from several organisations and network with other intranet professionals.
