The report

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 has been tremendously successful for collaboration and intranets, but the dominant position in both the public and the private sector means that SharePoint 2007 has also emerged an obvious; some would say almost unavoidable choice as the next generation web solution.

Excerpt: Key research findings

IT departments use Microsoft technologies as their strategic development platform and today some even explicitly require Microsoft products. A large proportion of the widespread SharePoint deployments can alone be explained by this trend. This means that consequently IT tends to be the initial driver, which easily distances the website project from its primary purpose to achieve business goals. Based on our research we recommend that senior management is involved from the beginning to ensure strategic alignment and executive support for the significant on-going project costs.

We also recommend that your project planning takes into account that rolling out SharePoint is a multi-year process. This means that some business units may need to wait before they are migrated. By offering guidelines for those business units that cannot wait, you might be able to avoid that they bypass the organisational processes and invest in an alternate platform.
